President Shin-ichi Hirano, Nagoya University, described his university policy to attain a sustainable development on campus based on a multidisciplinary approach, which emphasizes students’ continuous engagement and outreaches to local communities and society as a whole, and takes in account the economical impact and its relationship with industrial environment.

President Kiyokazu Washida, Osaka University, quoted an old Japanese proverb - “taru wo shiru”, or “ be aware when your want is met” - suggesting that satisfying desires may not be the only way: “sufficiency in insufficiency” is the ideal attitude of citizens from a philosopher’s point of view. Part of university education should be to nurture people who are able to bridge specialists and society.
